At any cost?

gordon-brown-404_667800cThis week’s New Statesman carries an article explaining how Brown could still lead Labour to victory next year. Figuring it was a pre-Euros, Brownite moral-boosting plant, I read on. It is depressing stuff. Basically, it boils down to:

  • Spending £400m of public money on advertising government/Labour schemes
  • Identity politics
  • Sitting MPs working as glorified social workers
  • Our lopsided electoral system
  • People forgetting about McBride
  • The fact that the major decisions Brown has made as PM have been designed to outflank the Tories.

So, rather than a loyalist, keep-your-chin-up sort of piece, it is actually more likely to lead the disillusioned party member to think: is this really what it has come to? Isn’t there any alternative?

(The NS leader is also strikingly pro-Johnson this week).

That is all.

I can’t quite get my head around Ieuan Wyn Jones’ argument. Yes, Westminster shouldn’t try to get in the way of the referendum. But is Scamalot relevant to this? Is it a good idea for Assembly Members – or IWJ’s own party – to re-advertise their questionable public funding decisions?
